Molecular clock has two meanings. Firstly, it may refer to the assumption (or observation) of constant rates of molecular evolution in all lineages under consideration. Secondly, it may refer to the method of molecular dating, where the amount of divergence between sequence is used to estimate the age of the last common ancester of those sequences.
