Genome refers to all of the DNA inherited as a coherent set. The human nuclear genome is arranged on 23 different chromosomes. Haploid gametes contain only one copy of the nuclear genome (23 chromosomes). Most human cells also contain multiple copies of the mitochondrial genome, a circular DNA molecule replicated within the mitochondria, and transmitted to the next generation in the cytolplasm of the egg cell. Most plant cell also contain a chloroplast genome.
